A week on...

It has been just over a week since the devastating earthquake hit SiChuan Province with a magnitude of 7.8 felt as far away from the epicentre as Beijing and Shanghai. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake is considered a major event, capable of causing widespread damage and injuries in populated areas. It struck about 57 miles northwest of Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan and was said to have centred about 6 miles below the surface.

The death toll is has reached 34 000 and still climbing with thousands still missing. Over 436 000 homes have collapsed leaving 245 000 injured and a staggering 5 million homeless. The predicted death toll is about 50 000.

These are just a few facts about this tragic natural disaster. I as a human being with emotions can't help but break down in tears when watching the footage posted on youtube. Thinking about all those children that have been left orphanned and watching as people cry for their family members that have been crushed under the many buildings that collapsed, makes you realise how vulnerable we are as human beings. We're talking in comparison to the wars that are being fought in various countries, in the end Mother Nature rules over us. Admittedly war isn't a great thing either, but at least death has become a constant repercussion of war and wars that have been fought throughout the decades.

But in the end, nobody wants these things to happen. We learn from our mistakes and hopefully next time we'll be prepared for such tragedies to happen. Just like the tsunami in indonesia, they've picked themselves up and rebuilt their way back to normality.

An interesting trend i read off a chinese site was how in January snowstorms hit China, and in March protests in Burma, and May came this Earthquake ... What will happen in July? Lets hope its nothing negative.
